The challenge
SK ID Solutions, a leading provider of secure digital identity services, is addressing the pressing challenge of technological obsolescence in its SIM-based Mobile-ID solution. After serving as a reliable tool for many years, this technology faces challenges from emerging standards such as eIDAS 2.0 and the increasing adoption of eSIM technology in the European Union market.

The transition to a next-generation digital identity platform requires significant investment and strategic planning. Before moving forward, SK ID Solutions aims to assess the market demand for this new solution and validate its value proposition. The central question is whether there is sufficient interest among EU member states to justify replacing the current system with a modern, scalable, and user-friendly digital identity solution.

The process
To address this challenge, the SK ID team employed Design Thinking methodologies, starting with an extensive discovery phase. They identified key stakeholders, conducted in-depth user research, and developed a prototype to tackle user pain points and opportunities.

Among the key stakeholders that the SK ID team identified are:

Mobile ID Product Manager. Ensures alignment with user needs and technological advancements.
Head of Business Services at SK ID Solutions. Validates the business case and ensures market scalability.
Telecommunications Operators. Provide feedback on implementation challenges.
Tech-savvy Professionals. Represent the primary user group, reliant on seamless and secure identity solutions for cross-border transactions.

To ground their solution in real-world needs, the team conducted extensive user research through interviews, surveys, and feedback sessions with individuals across Estonia, Finland, Germany, and Hungary. This process allowed them to identify common user profiles and pain points, leading to the creation of a detailed persona. The primary persona, Emily, a 34-year-old entrepreneur from Berlin, exemplifies a user who values efficiency and modernity in digital identity systems. By mapping her journey, the team uncovered both positive and negative pathways to adoption.

Storyboard that illustrates Emily's current context and highlights user experience problems

Following an in-depth exploration of the problem space, the SK ID team articulated several "How Might We" (HMW) questions to uncover potential opportunities:

• HMW create an attractive transition for implementing a new digital identity solution for current users?
• HMW make users feel in control of how digital identity solutions use their personal identifying information?
• HMW create a new digital solution that must be used for government, banking, and legal procedures?

After extensive deliberation and further research, the team refined their focus to a specific design opportunity: "How Might We empower German professionals to seamlessly and securely authorize online documents while minimizing disruptions to their busy schedules?"

The solution
To tackle this challenge, the SK ID team proposed a comprehensive and user-centric digital identity platform. Key features of this platform include:

eSIM Integration: Enables secure, instant identity verification directly on the user’s device.
National ID Linkage: Allows users to securely link their eSIM to their national ID during registration.
Time-Limited Data Sharing: Empowers users with privacy controls for managing data access.
Seamless Transition: Compatibility with existing phone numbers ensures minimal disruption.

The team meticulously designed and tested user flows for both onboarding and application usage, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience.

Our proposed solution integrates cutting-edge technology to deliver a secure and user-friendly digital identity platform.
